Week 10 of the NFL season begins on Thursday night with a battle for the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Chicago Bears (2-7) welcome the Carolina Panthers (1-7) to Solider Field in front of a national primetime audience.
The Bears come into this matchup after losing two straight games, to the LA Chargers and most recently to the New Orleans Saints. Starting quarterback Justin Fields has missed the last three games with a thumb injury. He returned to practice late last week, but with the short turnaround, it’s unclear if he will play Thursday. If he can’t go, it will be Tyson Bagent, former Division II quarterback at Shepherd University, leading Chicago.
The Panthers are a young team, with 2023 first-overall pick Byrce Young leading the charge behind center. They earned their lone win of the season two weeks ago over the Houston Texans but took a loss to the Colts on Sunday.
Carolina came crashing back to Earth in a loss to the Colts last week, with Bryce Young throwing two pick-sixes. It was a regression from a 15-13 win over the Texans in Week 8, one that put pressure back on Frank Reich and new offensive play-caller Thomas Brown to get the offense figured out as Young's rookie season continues down a concerning path.
Young might be facing another rookie quarterback on Thursday, as undrafted Tyson Bagent could be in line to start as Justin Fields continues to recover from a thumb injury. While Bagent has shown flashes across three starts, turnovers have doomed the Bears over his last two outings.
Whichever quarterback can limit turnovers figures to be the one with the advantage at Soldier Field.
This matchup won't even have much of an impact on the race for the No. 1 pick in April's draft, as the Bears own the Panthers' pick. One of Chicago's picks will move up after this game, while the other will slide down the order. For both teams, the hope is that a win will start to turn momentum back on their side after a tumultuous stretch to the start the season.
The Panthers have enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Chicago Bears at 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday at Soldier Field. Given that both teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Last Sunday, the Panthers lost to the Colts at home by a decisive 27-13 margin. Despite 77 more yards than Indianapolis, Carolina couldn't convert that extra yardage to scores.
Meanwhile, Chicago's game on Sunday was all tied up 14-14 at the half, but sadly for them it didn't stay that way. They fell 24-17 to the Saints. Chicago has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite the defeat, the Bears had strong showings from Cole Kmet, who picked up 55 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and Tyson Bagent, who threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns.
The matchup between the 1-7 Carolina Panthers and 2-7 Chicago Bears is hardly your typical prime-time showdown. And while the two teams might not register much excitement with their on-field product, there is an intriguing subplot that will be playing out at Soldier Field.
Just as the Panthers (1-7) have been mired in the basement of the NFC South, the Bears (2-7) have been bringing up the rear in the NFC North. They’re coming off a 24-17 road loss to the New Orleans Saints last weekend when quarterback Tyson Bagent also tossed three interceptions.
Another week, another pair of losses for these two young and struggling franchises. Despite getting their first win over the Texans two weeks ago, the Panthers continue to struggle in head coach Frank Reich and rookie QB Bryce Young’s first season. The offense lacks the firepower to support young under center, and the protection from the offensive line needs significant improvement.
The players on the unit haven’t been the only ones struggling. The Panthers organization brought in Reich to turn a sputtering franchise back into an NFC South competitor with his offensive expertise. After an 0-6 start, Reich turned offensive play-calling duties over to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown.
While there is hope within the organization surrounding Brown’s abilities, the coordinator had never called a game before this season. The Panthers have scored just two touchdowns in the two games since taking over. Reich and the coaching staff will have to figure things out if they are genuinely the long-term answer in Charlotte.
